Pius X

(1835–1914)
   Saint and Pope.
Pius was born Giuseppe Melchior Sarto in Riese, Italy. In 1884 he was consecrated Bishop of Mantua; he was appointed Patriarch of Venice and a Cardinal in 1893 and he was elected Pope in 1903. He is remembered for laying down the principles for Catholic Action – namely, social action effected under hierarchical control. He condemned the theological modernism of loisy and his followers and he insisted in 1910 that all clergy take an oath against the new movement. He also was anxious to bolster the faith of ordinary people by encouraging frequent Communion, more effective religious education and a new devotion to the Virgin mary. Although he was primarily concerned with his role as a religious leader, he was also forced to concern himself with maintaining the independence of the French Church from State control. His holiness was recognised even in his lifetime and he was canonised in 1954.
